Frequently Asked Questions
-
When will you start painting my commission?Once we have settled on the photo I'll be working from and have agreed on the size and medium you'd like, an invoice will be issued for the 30% non-refundable deposit, once this is received, you will be added to my work schedule. At that point I will be able to let you know when I expect to begin and an estimated completion date. Because each commission is an individual, personalised artwork, once work has started I cannot accept returns or offer refunds. This does not affect your consumer legal rights where goods are faulty or mis-described.
-
What medium can I choose for my commission?I make pencil or pastel drawings, and watercolour or acrylic paintings. It's up to you which you'd prefer. I'm happy to advise what may suit your particular photo best, but ultimately the final choice is yours. My "Commissions" page has examples of each of these mediums so you can see which suits your taste best.
-
Do you need sittings or work from photos?I work from photos when making your commission. As well as the main photo chosen for me to work from, it's best if you're able to provide a few other photos for reference. This enables me to get a better idea of the subjects personality and character. During the initial commission stage we will discuss what photos you'd like and agree on the best one to use for the artwork.
-
Who owns the copyright of my commission?I do. The artist retains exclusive legal copyrights and intellectual property of all artwork. When buying an artwork from Red Fox Art the client is purchasing the physical object alone.
-
Can any changes be made to my commission?Depending on the medium chosen, some changes can be difficult. However, I like to keep you up to date with your commission with "work in progress" photos , so along the way I will ask you if there is anything you can see that you'd like altered.
-
Will you share my commission on social media?Yes, I reserve the right to display work in progress images and the final artwork on my website and on my social media platforms. Also, to use the image for print purposes if necessary. However, I do not share any commission until after you have received it if this is requested when commissioning an artwork as it is intended as a surprise gift.
-
What kind of photo do you need? It's important the photo is clear and in focus and is as close as possible to the subject. Lack of detail in the photo, would mean I would have to "invent" parts of the painting. A poor quality photo would have a negative result on the final artwork.
-
Will I see the final commission before you send it?Absolutely. Once I have reached a point where I feel the artwork is complete, I will send you a final image via email for you to approve. This is the last opportunity for any very minor alterations. Once you've agreed that you're happy and the painting is complete I will send an invoice for the outstanding fee, this is to be paid within 7 days. Once paid, I will ship your commission to you. I will inform you when it is posted and provide you with a tracking number.
-
How long does it take? When should I order?I have a waiting list, so it's important you make it clear, when enquiring, if you have any specific date in mind. The whole process can take a minimum of 8 weeks, depending on what commissions I am already working on. My work schedule is on a first come first served basis, however, I will do what I can to achieve your desired timeframe if possible without affecting other clients. Holidays and special occasions are the busiest so I would advise booking by September for Christmas and January for Mothers Day. If you've left it late, please do get in touch and I'll let you know if there is any possibility I can fit you in.
-
What size photo should I send?Digital photos should be emailed in their original size, with no filters. Screenshots are not good enough quality. If the photo is a printed photo, a high resolution (300dpi) scan should be sent. A photo of a photo is not good enough quality as it tends to skew and distort the original. During the initial commission process we will discuss the photos and agree on the best ones to use for your commission.
-
How much does a commission cost? The cost does depend on the size and medium you choose. I offer common sizes, which makes finding a frame easier. However, if you would like a custom size I can quote a price for that too. The number of subjects in the painting also affects the cost. For some starting prices please see my Price Guide, if you have any other questions about pricing, please get in touch.
-
Can you ship internationally?Yes, I can ship your artwork internationally. I have paintings in America, Australia and New Zealand as well as here in the UK. There are obviously added shipping costs involved, so please let me know delivery details when making your enquiry.
-
Do you frame my commission?I do not provide frames. I find it is a personal choice when framing your artwork, so I am happy to leave it to you. This also saves on shipping costs, and avoids any broken glass and damage to your artwork. However, all artworks are delivered with a black mount, this helps protect the surface of the artwork while packaged and in transit.
